Weather will decide for Mujadale

Friday 9 January 2015, 4:55pm

Trainer Paul Jones will be keeping a watch on the weather before deciding whether Mujadale takes his place at Flemington.

Flemington track manager Mick Goodie says he is expecting anywhere between 15 and 60mm of rain and with that in mind Jones said the gelding, who races below his best on wet tracks, may be a scratching from the Rain Lover Handicap (2500m).

On Friday the Flemington track was in the good range.

The winner of the Ballarat Cup three starts back, Mujadale lumped 59kg into fourth place in the Bagot Handicap (2800m) at Flemington on New Year's Day at his most recent start.

On Saturday Mujadale will be ridden by Jordon Childs whose 2kg claim brings him in with 56.5 kg.

With senior jockey Kevin Forrester having ridden the gelding at his past four starts, Jones has no worries putting an apprentice on board saying Mujadale is an easy horse to ride.

"He pretty much runs his own race," Jones said.

"You've just got to sit there and know what speed you're doing and rate the horse properly."

Jones said Mujadale had a quiet week following his latest run and said there were no suitable races for the gelding in the near future.

He said he would spell Mujadale during the wetter months and bring him back for another campaign when the tracks get firmer.

"There's still a couple of nice races coming up," Jones said.

"There's the Mornington Cup, there's the Torney Night Cup at Moonee Valley and there's another nice race in Adelaide.

"He's had a few runs so we'll just have to see how he goes each run at a time from now on.
