Pelicano has shown trainer Tony McEvoy enough in his two starts back from injury to indicate he is ready to make an impact in the Gosford Gold Cup.

The six-year-old will carry topweight of 59kg, 1kg less than he lumped to win the Werribee Cup in December 2013 before injury halted his career.

Pelicano was off the scene for almost 12 months after undergoing surgery to remove a chip from a sesamoid.

McEvoy has been encouraged by Pelicano's two starts back from injury.

He finished eighth in the Group Two Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 13 then raced closer to the pace in the Group Three Summer Cup (2000m) and held on well for fourth.

"I've been pleased with his two starts and pleased with how he has come through them," McEvoy said.

"He over-raced a bit in the Summer Cup and did well to finish where he did."

Pelicano is the early favourite for the $150,000 race at $3.20 ahead of Midsummer Sun ($4.20) and Multilateral ($4.60).

Hugh Bowman will be aboard Pelicano as he tries to add this year's running of the Central Coast feature to his 2013 win on the Chris Waller-trained Moriarty.

Waller relies the enigmatic Hoylonny and last-start Tattersalls Club Cup winner Multilateral.

McEvoy is also taking Pit Boss to Gosford to run in the 1200m class 4 handicap.

The four-year-old has done most of his racing in Melbourne and Adelaide out of McEvoy's South Australian stable and won a recent barrier trial at the trainer's second home at Hawkesbury.

He had two clockwise starts as a two-year-old, for a second at Newcastle and third in a 1500-metre race at Rosehill when finishing just behind runner-up Amovatio.

The Waller-trained Amovatio is the favourite for Saturday's Magic Millions Cup at the Gold Coast.

"I was very pleased with his trial and I expect him to do well," McEvoy said.
