John Keating guides Override to Valley win

Saturday 3 January 2015, 10:27pm

Eleven months after suffering head injuries in a race fall at Kyneton, jockey John Keating has scored a satisfying city win at Moonee Valley on Override.

Keating guided the Brent Stanley-trained Override to an all-the-way win in Saturday's Telstra Phonewords Handicap (1000m) in a rare city opportunity for the jockey.

Keating spent about 10 days in intensive care after a fall at Kyneton in February last year.

After a period of rehabilitation he returned to race riding in July.

"It was a little bit frustrating. I honestly can't remember anything about the fall or a month after but all I know was that I was 100 per cent and I needed to get back riding," Keating said.

"Since I've come back I've had a lot of support from various trainers."

Keating said he has been riding trackwork at various tracks and Override's win in town was a reward.

Stanley said Keating, who had ridden Override in his past two starts at Swan Hill and Bendigo, rides work for him three times a week.

Override ($12) scored by 1-1/4 lengths over Trevinder with a nose to Spartan Warrior third.

"He hasn't won on this horse until tonight but he's done nothing wrong on him," Stanley said.

"It's great for him to get a city winner."
