Goold given chance to shine in Goldmarket

Friday 2 January 2015, 12:31pm

Apprentice Geoff Goold has received a vote of confidence from trainer Kelly Doughty with his booking for Little Brown Horse in the Goldmarket Handicap.

Jeff Lloyd rode Little Brown Horse when she was an eye-catching fifth in the Just Now Stakes at Doomben on December 14.

However, Doughty has elected to go with Goold who will not be able to claim in Saturday's Goldmarket.

Goold has a great record on the mare having ridden Little Brown Horse four times for two wins and two thirds.

"Jeff (Lloyd) rode her well but she probably should have finished closer," Doughty said.

"Geoff knows exactly how to ride her. She needs to be held up and he seems to be able to do that."

Little Brown Horse has been a great money spinner for Doughty with 11 wins and $228,000 prize money.

"I would love to see her win a feature race," Doughty said.

"She likes the Gold Coast and that is a plus for us."

Doughty and her husband Gary have been great supporters of Goold who has had a mixed year.

He was the rising star apprentice earlier this year but the retirement of his master, trainer Len Treloar, was a major setback.

Gary Doughty, a Group One-winning jockey, rates Goold among the best apprentices in the state.

The Gold Coast track received 81mm of rain on Wednesday which did not worry Doughty because Little Brown Horse handles wet tracks.

But it is not the same case for her other runner Where's ThatDragon who will be ridden by Lloyd.

The filly was a shock Doomben winner at $51 two starts back but was well beaten in last Saturday's Vo Rogue Plate.

"It was just too wet for her last week. Her dam didn't handle the going and nor did her siblings so I suppose it was no shock," Doughty said.
