Promising two-year-old Le Chef is expected to shorten dramatically in Magic Millions Classic betting if he can qualify for the race.

Le Chef will make the long trip from his Sunshine Coast stable on Saturday to contest the First National Two-Years-Old Handicap (1200m) at the Gold Coast.

The gelding drew perfectly in barrier one and trainer Darryl Hansen has retained premiership-leading apprentice Luke Tarrant for the ride.

Le Chef, a brilliant Ipswich winner two weeks ago, is a $21 chance for the Magic Millions Classic on Saturday week.

He is 24th in the order of entry with $14,100 in prize money.

But if he makes the field, so impressive was his Ipswich win, Le Chef will be rated among the top chances for the Classic.

Hansen believes Le Chef will need to win or run second to be assured of a place in the race and is equally certain if he does make the field he will be hard to beat.

"There are a lot of other horses trying to make the field at the last moment. But it is $41,000 to first and $13,000 for second so he should make if he can run in the quinella," Hansen said.

Things are starting to fall into place for Le Chef after a slow start to his career.

"He ran fifth behind the Classic favourite Wicked Intent at Doomben and he was very raw. He didn't know what was going on," Hansen said.

"But we put blinkers on him at Ipswich and he really switched on. The 1200 metres will be no trouble and if it rains again he is bred to handle wet tracks."

Le Chef, who is by top sire Exceed and Excel, cost Mt Isa owner Lenore Saunders $120,000 at the Magic Millions yearling sales.

Lenore, her husband Graeme and son Andrew have had a lot of success with their horses across the state.
