Weather the key to stayer's luck

Monday 29 December 2014, 4:31pm

All Steve Englebrecht wants to start the new year is a firm Randwick track for Lucky Lucky Lucky in the Tattersalls Club Cup.

The Warwick Farm trainer has no doubt the five-year-old is fit enough and strong enough to win the Listed feature on New Year's Day and make amends for his fourth in the Christmas Cup last time out.

With no extra entries received on Monday, there are just nine nominations for the 2400m race and the possibility of a six-horse field.

"He is not suited with any sort of moisture in the ground," Englebrecht said.

"I'm just hoping the weather holds until Thursday so he can show his best.

"The Cup will be his eighth run this preparation but he is a very fit horse. I also prefer a small field because it won't be strung out like some of these staying races are."

Englebrecht thought enough of Lucky Lucky Lucky to run him in the 2013 Queensland Derby in which he finished 10th after a slow start and a chequered run.

The gelding's four wins have been from 1400 to 2200 metres but his trainer has no concerns about the 2400 metres.

"He's had a few goes at it and been a bit unlucky a couple of times," he said.

Before the Christmas Cup, Lucky Lucky Lucky came within a short head of winning over the distance on Randwick's Kensington track.

Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller has four entries in the Tatts Cup but only last year's winner Permit is a confirmed runner.

Summer Cup winner I'm Imposing is likely to head to the spelling paddock while Waller will monitor Multilateral before deciding if he backs up from his four lengths sixth to his stablemate in the Boxing Day feature.

Hoylonny finished last in that race and Waller said he was uncertain what he would do next.

The other Tatt's Cup entries are Ghost Protocol, Planet Purple and Plutorius.
