Cooldini on target for Tasmanian carnival

Sunday 28 December 2014, 4:55pm

Tasmania beckons for promising stayer Cooldini who is being aimed at the Hobart and Launceston Cups.

The lightly raced son of Bernadini was unplaced at his first run back from a break at Flemington on December 20 but trainer Robert Smerdon said he had taken benefit from the race.

The Hobart Cup on February 9 and the Launceston Cup on February 25 are both run over 2400 metres, a trip at which Cooldini has excelled.

"I reckon he can get to Tasmania and that's certainly on the radar with him," Smerdon said.

Cooldini may have beaten just one runner to the line at Flemington but the effort suggested to Smerdon the five-year-old had come back in good order despite being beaten more than nine lengths.

Smerdon said Cooldini was not suited by the slow tempo but the trainer was impressed with was how strong he was over the line.

"We thought he was OK," Sadler said.

"The tempo was against him but one of the more pertinent factors was he was good 100 metres after the line.

"He was still going at the same momentum and I think that once we get him back to a trip he's still got life in him.

"He's not that heavily raced."

Cooldini has won six of his 20 starts with four of his victories at 2400m and beyond.

His most recent win was over over 2600m in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality in March, his first at stakes level.

The Tasmanian summer carnival has been a lucrative one for Victorian trainers with the Mick Kent-trained Epingle winning both features earlier this year while the Peter Moody-trained Zacielo completed the double in 2004.
