Trainer Peter Moody felt he was owed a winner by his apprentice Regan Bayliss on Herstory and the talented young rider delivered.
Moody thought Bayliss, who has earned plenty of praise as he has risen to the top of the Melbourne apprentices' premiership, had erred in a couple of rides earlier at Sandown on Friday.
A bit of "education" between races was followed by Bayliss guiding three-year-old Herstory to victory in the Dennis Hanrahan Handicap (1400m).
The win was Bayliss' 17th in the city victory in Melbourne for the season to have him in the top five in the jockeys' premiership and leading the apprentices' standings.
"He slaughtered a couple earlier here today so don't forget to mention that as well as the good ones because they start thinking they can drink their own bath water," Moody quipped in a post-race interview.
"There's no doubt he is a very talented young rider but he can slaughter as many as the best of them. It's a learning curve and a bit of education between races helped him win that race."
Herstory was narrowly beaten first-up and showed plenty of fight second-up to notch her second win from four starts.
She defeated Sagacious Miss ($21) by a half-neck with a head to Mossbeat third.
Moody believes Herstory will continue to improve with maturity but is unsure where she will head next.
"She's a Magic Millions horse but I think it would be a bit rash to be charging up there (to the Gold Coast) and taking on the three-year-olds (in the Magic Millions Guineas)," Moody said.
"We'll assess that race but I'm sure there's a lot of good options for her down here at the moment."
