A wide barrier put paid to Coffs Harbour Cup plans for Bouzy Rouge and mare was redirected to Randwick where she delivered on Saturday.

Trained by Luke Griffith at Scone, Bouzy Rouge was all set to run in Thursday's Cup won in her absence by Southern Shimmer.

Griffith and her owners opted for the benchmark 72 over 1600 metres, the same distance as the country feature and she pushed through a gap late to beat Cocktail Time by a long head.

"She drew 15 in the Cup," Griffith said.

"It's a six-hour drive there and a four-hour drive to Sydney so we thought this was the better option.

"I couldn't believe our luck when the favourite, The Alfonso, came out this morning.

"It all fell into place. The horse she beat at her previous start at Scone won the Coffs Harbour Cup.

"And this race was worth about the same to the winner."

As a seven-year-old, Bouzy Rouge is earmarked for breeding duties but they are on hold for the moment.

"She is getting hard to place in the country so we will come back to town," Griffith said.

"She has got a few wear-and-tear issues now so we will see what happens.

"The owners bought her for $10,000 at a tried horses sale and one of them, Wayne Brown, has a pre-training property and he will probably breed from her."

Griffith admitted he was a little worried when Brenton Avdulla opted to go through the gap, given the mare's history of not liking horses around her.

"She's not very big and can be a bit claustrophobic," Griffith said.

Avdulla said she jumped so well, he took up a position on the fence and decided not to make her work around horses and she was strong to the line.

Bouzy Rouge was an $8 chance with the favourite Specific Choice ($3) third, three-quarters of a length behind Cocktail Time ($4.60).
