MRC honour Jim Moloney with Listed race

Thursday 12 July 2018, 4:56pm

The late Jim Moloney will be honoured with a Listed race in his name during the Melbourne Racing Club's spring carnival at Caulfield.

Moloney, who trained champion sprinter Vain, was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2015 and died, aged 90, later that year.

John and Gerard Moloney, sons of Jim Moloney, are Caulfield-based horse trainers while Gerard's son Patrick Moloney is a Victorian jockey.

The Jim Moloney Stakes will be a 1400m-Listed race for fillies and will be run for the first time on September 22 on the program which includes the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and the Group Three Naturalism Stakes.

"The Melbourne Racing Club is thrilled to be able to honour a legend of Australian racing with the naming of the Jim Moloney Stakes," MRC chief executive Josh Blanksby said.

"Jim has left an indelible mark on our sport, both through his training performances and through his sons John and Gerard, who in turn have educated a rising star of the Victorian jockey ranks in Patrick."
