The pictures on the previous page tell a great story. The top one is of the Needs Further filly out of Tycoon Sali I purchased at the 2018 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale. In my opinion she was the best yearling in the sale and was the second most expensive.
The second photo is of her full sister I purchased at the 2017 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale. She races as Long Tall Sali and won the 2018 Tasmanian Magic Millions Classic as she liked. Craig Newitt who rode her described her as the best two year old filly in Tasmania after her win.
As you can see from the photos they are very similar in type.
The filly
Two years ago when I attended the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale I was taken with some of the progeny of Armidale Stud’s first season sire Needs Further. They certainly looked like racehorses and this assessment was backed up with them coming out running and for one of his daughters to be the first stakes winner of the first season sires in Australia. This was impressive.
In 2017 when I attended the sale I wasn’t going to miss out and had four vetted. The four I liked were well received by the market selling for up to $60,000 although Our Long Sali was the one I was keenest on.
This filly is very much like Our Long Sali as a type. She is very athletic and has nice length to her. Having written that she also quite strong and possesses a wonderful hindquarter. She has an attractive head and has inherited the a very important characteristic that Last Tycoon puts into a pedigree. He really tidies up the progeny and puts a lot of quality into the foals.
Needs Further
Needs Further is by Encosta De Lago who is quickly establishing himself as a sire of sires with the ill fated Northern Meteor being his best.
Needs Further was a good racehorse winning the time honoured ATC Carbine Club Stakes at Royal Ranwick where he ran good time. His dam Crowned Glory was placed 2nd in the STC Golden Slipper Stakes and his pedigree page oozes high class performers.
Needs Further was reared at the famous Gooree Stud which produced Northern Meteor as well as well as Australia’s Champion First Season Sire in 2015/16 Season in Smart Missile as well as Yoursong who is currently 3rd on the Australian second Season List. Gooree has one of the best broodmare bands in Australia.
Needs Further’s dam is by Danehill and grand dam by the great Bletchingly and a ½ sister to Zabeel. When you put these bloodlines together you start to realise why he is such a good hope at stud.
Needs Further’s first crop hit the ground running last season and he has gone on with the job in the current season where he has the best two juveniles in the state. He looks to have a very bright future.
Tycoon Sali
As you could imagine I have looked at 1000’s of mares in my time in racing and for some reason some stand out in your memory. About 15 years ago I visited Camoquill Stud in Tasmania to inspect their yearlings. In a paddock near the homestead I spotted a mare and asked the Camoquill’s owner Graham McLeod who she was. Her name was Saliah by Salieri and was one of the most attractive mares I have ever seen.
As it turned out Saliah was to go on to be a very good broodmare producing six winners from seven to race including the very good stakes winner Bank Robber and Kwassa Kwassa who ran second to Black Caviar at Flemington. She is also the dam of Tycoon Sali.
Ponton Flyer appears in the 3rd dam. She was a star on the track and at stud. She won at Group 2 level and was placed 2nd in the Group 1 VRC Sires Produce Stakes and MRC 1000 Guineas.
As a broodmare Tycoon Sali has had four to race for three winners including Liberty Tycoon the winner of nine races and of course Our Long Sali. She has had issues getting into foal and had a few years off but I’m pleased the breeders persisted and hopefully this outstanding filly will further enhance her reputation as a broodmare.
Armidale Stud
Armidale Stud has been run as a Thoroughbred Nursery for over 50 years. The Wishaw family are an institution in Tasmania and are extremely highly regarded as running one of the most professional stud farms in Australia.
They have continued to support the breeding industry in Tasmania through some difficult times for racing and I have no hesitation in purchasing a yearling from them. They are outstanding breeders.
Some of the better horses to have come from Armidale Stud in recent years include Up Cups, Lady Lynette, Queenstown, Iggimacool, Helova Street, Like A Carousel, Dream Pedlar, Black And Tough and Rebel Bride.
