Featured Syndicator: Prime Thoroughbreds

Wednesday 29 October 2014, 11:26am

This week we caught up with Joe O'Neill, owner and manager of elite syndication company, Prime Thoroughbreds. Having experienced serious longevity in the syndication business, not to mention over 600 winners, we find out what Joe looks for in a horse and who has been influential in the shaping of his career.

When selecting horses for syndication, what specifically do you look for?

I always make sure they have good conformation and a nice pedigree. I like to buy horses that come from a winning family and are from a reputable farm.

What’s your favourite past time?

Watching cricket, playing golf (I used to play off a handicap of 9 but now it’s around 22). I also enjoy going out to a nice restaurant with my wife and socialising with friends and clients.

Who has had the biggest influence(s) on your career in the Thoroughbred Industry?

Billy Mitchell, Harry Mitchell, Arthur Mitchell, Kris Lees and John Thompson.

When selecting a trainer, which things do you take into consideration?

I select the trainer by the type of horse. For example, I will pick a trainer who has a strength in training stayers if the horse is bred to be, or is showing ability to be a stayer.
