Injured Hopwood on sideline for 12 months

Tuesday 28 October 2014, 4:14pm

Jockey Libby Hopwood will be sidelined for at least a year as she recovers from a head injury suffered in a four-horse fall at Murray Bridge which claimed the life of Caitlin Forrest.

Forrest's horse was leading the race on October 14 when it appeared to break down, creating a chain reaction.

Hopwood has been in hospital since the fall with a broken collar bone, fractured spine and bruising to her brain.

Her hopes of returning to riding any time soon were dashed on Tuesday.

"Just got news that I need to be out of the saddle at least a year cos of the head trauma I got in the fall so I will b back but in a while x," Hopwood tweeted.

Forrest's death came in the same week as Queensland's Carly-May Pie died from injuries suffered when a horse she was riding in a jump-out at Rockhampton broke both its legs.
