Sydneysider Burbero in lightning Qld visit

Friday 15 August 2014, 1:33pm

Sydney galloper Burbero will dodge the early spring carnival stars and make a lightning trip to Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The Bjorn Baker stable believes Burbero is well placed in the Stanley River Thoroughbreds Handicap (1400m) in which he will carry 56.5kg.

A Randwick winner three starts back, Burbero lumped 58kg when fourth to Rock Sturdy at Rosehill at his most recent Sydney start.

Baker's racing manager James Clarke said Burbero was paying for his consistency with big weights in Sydney.

"He probably has reached his level down here and it is hard to win with those big weights," he said.

"Burbero has been a very good horse for us. But you have to ask whether he is up to the top horses."

Clarke said Burbero would have just the one start in Brisbane before heading home.

Burbero is much better on dry tracks, having won seven races on good surfaces.

Baker, who won this year's Magic Millions with Unencumbered, has booked top jockey Damian Browne for Burbero.

Browne, who was suspended for eight meetings on Wednesday, had been in superb form since taking a short break towards the end of 2013/14 racing season.

Burbero did his early racing in New Zealand where he won a Matamata maiden and has won seven races in Australia for Baker.

Meanwhile, stakes-winning mare Black Magic could be having her final start in the race.

"Unless she shows us something on Saturday, it will be her last start. She will be going to stud," trainer Bruce Brown said.

"But who knows? If we get some rain it might suit her."

The mare may well get conditions to suit with rain on Friday expected to continue into Saturday.

The meeting will be the last on Brisbane's premier track which will undergo a total reconstruction before its re-opening in mid 2015.

The course proper will be laid with a sand profile turf and a new drainage system as part of a $22 million overhaul of the complex.
