Royal Snitzel has the class: Smith

Wednesday 13 August 2014, 2:51pm

Experienced jockey Dale Smith has always believed Royal Snitzel has the class to make it in Group company.

Now Royal Snitzel has the chance to prove her rider's judgment correct in Saturday's Group Three Quezette Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Smith has ridden the Mick Price-trained filly in most of her work and her two comfortable wins that have served to increase the jockey's belief in the three-year-old.

"She's one of the fastest fillies I have ridden out of the machine and she puts herself straight into the race," Smith said.

"That's half the battle if a horse can put itself on the speed and stay out of the ruck."

The Quezette Stakes barrier draw has helped Smith's after Royal Snitzel drew barrier six.

Smith said he told Royal Snitzel's owners barrier six was one of the two gates from which he wanted the Snitzel filly to start.

"I was saying to the owners the other day that if I could pick any gate, it would be either five or six," Smith said.

"It allows me to bounce her out and assess the speed in the first 50 metres.

"By sitting outside the leader, leading or racing one-one, she can control the race fairly well within herself."

Smith said Royal Snitzel rounded out her Quezette Stakes preparation with a smart gallop at Caulfield on Tuesday morning.

Price has won the Quezette Stakes with Bel Mer and Corsaire in 2007 and 2009 respectively.
