High-profile horse Carlton House has been retired from racing and will stand at Darley Stud this spring.

Originally with Sir Michael Stoute in England, Carlton House was trained in Australia by Gai Waterhouse and had his final start when third in the race named for his owner, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes during the autumn.

The winner of two Group races under Stoute, he also ran third in the Epsom Derby and second to So You Think in the Prince of Wales's Stakes.

The seven-year-old was bred by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley and is by Street Cry, the sire of the 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking.

"Carlton House is such a magnificent and correct individual. He is by one of the most important stallions in the world," the Queen's racing advisor John Warren said.

"Carlton House proved he was high class from the moment he won his two-year-old maiden at Newbury by nine lengths and he was rated up there with the very best."

Alastair Pulford of Darley said the stud was delighted to be standing Carlton House this spring alongside his father.

"Carlton House possessed the precocity to be a tearaway winner at two but had that famous Street Cry durability which saw him mixing it with the best at six," he said.

"His pedigree is top class and he is a complete outcross for Danehill, Danzig and other Northern Dancer line stallions."

Carlton House will stand at Kelvinside for $16,500 including GST.
