Jamieson earns high praise for Hi Son ride

Saturday 15 February 2014, 2:50pm

Apprentice jockey Rikki Jamieson showed she had matured greatly as a race tactician with her win on Hi Son at Doomben on Saturday.

Punters were surprised when Hi Son led the field out of the straight, instead of being near last, in the Sky World Racing Handicap (2100m).

However, Jamieson won the battle of tactics when she ended up giving Hi Son the run of the race behind the leaders.

Hi Son ($4.60) went on to score by 1-1/2 lengths to the favourite Dazzle Us ($3.80) with a half length to Secret Garden ($5).

Trainer David Kelly said it was a perfect ride and Jamieson had improved considerably in recent times.

"I didn't want Rikki to lead early but when she did she didn't panic. That is the good thing about her when Plan A fails she can go to Plan B," Kelly said.

He said he thought Hi Son would be a genuine hope in the Queensland Derby last year but the horse was injured.

"Hi Son didn't get a chance to prove himself last winter but I hope he can this year in races like my home-town Cup at Grafton," Kelly said.

Jamieson said Hi Son had begun so well from his good alley that she had no option but to use his early pace.

"It turned out well because we got the run of the race and he was going strongly on the turn."

Meanwhile, smart filly Aimee ($6) drew some harsh words from trainer Noel Doyle despite her win.

"She is a real little lady and has her own ways. That was the second time she has been slow to go and we will have to give her some further work," Doyle said.
