Ike's Legacy out to revive carnival hopes

Tuesday 11 February 2014, 3:24pm

Blue-blood colt Ike's Legacy will figure in different riding tactics on Wednesday to complement a gear change in a bid to confirm his autumn carnival credentials.

In what shapes as a crossroads race for the David Vandyke-trained galloper, Ike's Legacy will race in blinkers for the first time in the John Ramsay Handicap (1300m) on the Kensington track at Randwick.

And in an attempt to make the most of the gear switch, Vandyke will instruct new jockey Jimmy Cassidy to try to lead on three-year-old.

"We're going to ride him aggressively out of the gate and probably go to the front," Vandyke said.

This move will be in direct contrast to the tactics used on Ike's Legacy when he disappointed Vandyke with his first-up run at Randwick last month.

"He's worked well in the blinkers and I think we should see a different horse," Vandyke said.

"We should see a horse who wants to run and races a bit more competitively."

By champion sire Redoute's Choice from the talented racemare Ike's Dream, Ike's Legacy was touted as a potential topliner after winning at his first start last year.

But plans to contest the $1 million Golden Rose were scrapped when he weakened out of the finish in a lead-up race.

Vandyke then put Ike's Legacy into training earlier than most autumn horses to have the colt up and running and peaking in time for next month's Randwick Guineas.

"Tomorrow will give us a very good guide to what is in store," Vandyke said.

As a measure of Ike's Legacy sudden fall from favour, he was largely ignored when bookmakers made him a $15 chance in first markets on Wednesday's race.

It's another son of Redoute's Choice who holds favouritism with Darley's Citations a $4.60 elect after resuming with a four-length win at Canterbury.
