Commanding Jewel in hoof injury scare

Tuesday 17 December 2013, 5:49pm

Trainer Leon Corstens has not given up on a late autumn appearance for Group One winner Commanding Jewel who injured a hoof in a paddock accident last month.

The three-quarter sister to Atlantic Jewel had her foot wrapped in a plaster cast for two weeks as a precaution.

Corstens said the mare had fully recovered but plans for the Melbourne and Sydney autumn carnivals are up in the air.

"It could rule her out, but she might get there towards the end. We'll just wait and see," Corstens said.

"I'll let her tell me how she is going."

He said the $500,000 Group One Goodwood in Adelaide in May was also a possibility for Commanding Jewel.

It's another setback for Commanding Jewel who was being set for the Rupert Clarke Stakes on September l but was withdrawn with inflammation in her near hind leg.

"She is her own worst enemy, but that's racing," Corstens said.

Commanding Jewel last ran on September 7 when she won the Group Two Let's Elope Stakes at Flemington.

The four-year-old's career has been restricted to just seven starts, four of which she has won including the 2012 Thousand Guineas.

She had almost a year away from the track with injury after her Group One win and had two starts in the spring.
