Into The Red salutes in Gold Edition Plate

By his own admission Kelso Wood is his harshest critic.

Wood blamed himself after Into The Red was beaten in two appearances during the spring carnival in Sydney, but it was smiles all round when the gelding won Saturday's Gold Edition Plate (1350m) at Doomben.

"I took him to Sydney and gave myself a bit of bashing for doing that because he could've been winning races here," Wood said.

"The plan was to run him in the Golden Rose but unfortunately he drew bad barriers in two starts down there so I brought him home and gave him a break."

Into The Red was backed from $2.20 into $1.95 favouritism and was hard ridden by jockey Chris Munce to win the Gold Edition by a long head from Choose A Saga ($17) with Gundy Spirit ($21) a half length away third.

Wood said Into The Red will have his next start in the Group Three Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) on December 28 before the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast a fortnight later.

Into The Red completed winning hat-trick in black-type races for Munce after earlier wins by Divine City in the Just Now Handicap and Someday in the Brisbane Handicap.

"It's amazing what happens when you get on fast horses," Munce said.

Although Into The Red's winning margin was narrow, Munce was impressed with his performance.

"He might've switched off the last bit but they've run very fast time so you can't be too critical," he said.

Munce starts a five-meeting careless riding suspension after Wednesday's Doomben fixture but will be back in time to ride Into The Red in the Vo Rogue Plate.
