Someday returns to form in Brisbane Hcp

Saturday 14 December 2013, 5:13pm

Trainer Kelso Wood is keen to chase more feature mile wins with Someday after he won the Brisbane Handicap (1600m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Ridden by Chris Munce, Someday, the $3.40 favourite, surged clear to win by three quarters of a length from Essington ($13) with Black Cash ($4.60) a long neck away third.

The victory was the first at 1600m for Someday and Wood plans to target the Listed Bernborough Handicap over the same distance at Toowoomba on New Year's Eve.

"He's been finding the sprint races a bit short for him lately and I always thought he'd come into his own once he got up in distance to mile races," Wood said.

"The Bernborough looks a good race for him the way he finished it off today."

Wood took Someday to Sydney for the spring carnival but the five-year-old returned home after below-par runs in the Show County Quality and Theo Marks Stakes.

"He was disappointing in Sydney but he only had two weeks off after the winter carnival and it probably wasn't long enough," he said.

Munce had Someday travelling comfortably in third place to the home turn before angling into the clear in the straight.

"It was his right race today when he drew well which gave him his opportunity to win," Munce said.

"He travelled up well and when Someday's on song he can sprint home as well as any horse in Queensland."
