Oakleigh Girl on track for Magic Millions

Saturday 14 December 2013, 4:15pm

Trainer Dan Bougoure is adamant Oakleigh Girl will cope with a pressure and stamina test in the Magic Millions.

Oakleigh Girl, the $1.50 favourite, kept her unbeaten record intact when she won Saturday's Calaway Gal Stakes (1010m) at Doomben but had only a length to spare from Ambitious Blonde.

Bougoure believes the filly has plenty of scope for improvement and is confident she will handle her first test at 1200m in the BJ McLachlan Stakes, a Group Three race, at Doomben on December 28.

"She was a bit fresh because she hadn't had a trial or anything going into it and was on the big side," Bougoure said.

"That will top her right off for the McLachlan which will toughen her up again and she'll be cherry ripe come Magic Millions day."

Oakleigh Girl led from the outset and reeled off brilliant sectionals of 33.66 seconds for her last 600m and 11.64 seconds for the final 200m.

Jockey Michael Cahill was warming the saddle for Craig Newitt who will be back aboard Oakleigh Girl in the McLachlan and Millions but was impressed with the filly's win.

Oakleigh Girl's win was a better result for Cahill after a nightmare ride aboard Vienna Royale whose Magic Millions prospects were dealt a major blow when he finished eighth as a $1.60 favourite in the Phelan Ready Stakes.

The colt veered left soon after the start then circled the field four deep before weakening in the straight.

"He ruined his chances at the start and it was hard to get a guide how he went because he hung nearly all the way," Cahill said.

"He jumped in the air at the start and was going to come out a neck behind them but as soon as he hit the ground that's when he went left."

First starter Bassillique ($11) won by a length from Goluana ($21) with Groomed For Glory ($71) a short half head away third.

Trainer Toby Edmonds predicted Bassillique will derive plenty of improvement from Saturday's win but was keeping a lid on his prospects in the Millions.

"I'm not sure that's the right form line today but he's still untapped and it was a good win," Edmonds said.

Bassillique's time more than a second slower than Oakleigh Girl recorded.
