Perth sprint star joins Waller stable

Wednesday 11 December 2013, 2:37pm

Chris Waller has been confirmed as the trainer of Barakey for the Group One-winning sprinter's eastern states campaign next year.

"I was asked by the horse's trainer Jim Taylor to take him which is a bit of an honour really," Waller said.

Barakey will be the second Perth star to find his way to Waller's Rosehill stable after it was announced last week Mr Moet will also head east for the Sydney autumn carnival.

"His record speaks for itself ... he's an exciting horse," Waller said of Barakey.

Barakey won his first 11 starts for Taylor, culminating in his Group One Winterbottom Stakes win over Power Princess.

A six-year-old, he was beaten for the first time when down the track in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington during an interrupted Melbourne autumn campaign.

Barakey's latest preparation resulted in a Prince Of Wales Stakes win at Ascot before he wound up ninth to Buffering in an unsuccessful defence of his Winterbottom crown.

The gelding is a pure sprinter, winning five races at 1000m, four at 1100m with another three victories coming at 1200m.

Mr Moet has been unplaced in two Perth starts since returning from a Melbourne spring carnival campaign when he ran in four Group One races - the Makybe Diva Stakes, Underwood Stakes, Caulfield Cup and Mackinnon Stakes.

Winner of the Railway Stakes last year, Mr Moet was never a factor in finishing fifth to the three-year-old Ihtsahymn in the Kingston Town Classic last Saturday.
