Unpretentious resumes with Schillaci win

Saturday 12 October 2013, 3:51pm

Trainer Nikki Burke is planning on putting Unpretentious up against the best sprinters after the talented gelding scored a comeback win at Caulfield.

Unpretentious's autumn campaign was over before it began when he injured himself playing up in the barriers before the Group One Galaxy in Sydney.

On Saturday, Unpretentious ($4) resumed in the Group Two Schillaci Stakes (1000m) in his first race since last year's spring carnival and outgunned Pago Rock ($9) in a driving finish to score by a head with 2-1/4 lengths to the favourite Kuroshio ($2.40) third.

It was Burke's biggest win but she is hoping for an even richer prize with her stable star who she said would likely have his next start in the Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) at Flemington on November 9.

"The 1000 metres was always going to be a bit of a worry but I can't wait to get him to Flemington now," a relieved Burke said.

"He's had so much bad luck. He's been a really unlucky horse and probably should have won five or six races. He's always had the talent there.

"Hopefully now he's ready to fulfil his potential."

The son of Stratum took his record to four wins from 11 starts and claimed his second stakes victory.

Jockey Damien Oliver had Unpretentious just worse than midfield on the rail in the eight-horse field and was able to angle into the clear at the right time in the straight.

Pago Rock sprinted down the outside but Unpretentious went with him and held him off.
