Group One-winning sprinter and successful sire Strategic has died at his birthplace Woodlands Stud aged 25.

Godolphin said Strategic succumbed to the infirmities of old age.

Strategic won seven races including the 1996 Group One Australia Stakes for Jack and Bob Ingham, the former proprietors of Woodlands.

He began stud duties in the spring of 1996 and has sired more than 600 individual winners, among them Australian Group One performers Platelet, Meurice and Mistegic and Strategic News, who was successful at the top level in South Africa.

After being retired from stud duties in 2014, Strategic enjoyed life at Woodlands in the Hunter Valley alongside his old racetrack rival and stablemate Octagonal.
