Gregorian Chant chases valuable stakes win

Friday 6 July 2018, 9:54am

Gregorian Chant gets the chance to chase a black-type win late in her juvenile season when she heads to Flemington for the Taj Rossi Series Final.

The Mitchell Freedman-trained filly finished fourth on debut over 1200m at Moonee Valley last month before winning a 1400m-maiden on a heavy track at Bendigo on June 17.

Freedman says Gregorian Chant still has a lot to learn but shapes as a filly who will get over a bit of ground and connections are happy to target Saturday's Listed race for two-year-olds over 1600m.

"We thought it was a good opportunity to have a go at getting some black-type beside her name," Freedman said.

"She's been in work for a long time. She had a few little issues getting going early but we just took a while to get her action right.

"I think she's a horse who is going to get over a trip in time.

"She's got a really good constitution and she ate well after her Bendigo win and did everything right so we thought we'd keep going.

"She's still doing well and appears as though she has come on a little bit from the other day so hopefully she can show that on Saturday."

Freedman also believes the big track at Flemington will suit the filly.

"Moonee Valley definitely wasn't her track but it was just the right race to kick her off in," he said.

"She was under a little bit of pressure before the corner the other day at Bendigo but with a big long straight she had her chance to wind up and get the job done.

"I've had a bit of a look and I think her form measures up well enough for it.

"With two-year-olds going to the mile for the first time you never really know but I'm sure at some point she'll be getting that distance if not further."
