Snowden backs Paximadia for Brisbane

Thursday 25 April 2013, 4:38pm

Paximadia gave Peter Snowden reason to think his chances of snaring more Group One juvenile glory can extend beyond the Champagne Stakes after a professional first-up win at Warwick Farm on Thursday.

Guelph is a warm favourite to give Snowden and his Darley-backed stable more Group One success at Randwick on Saturday after her brilliant Sires' Produce victory a fortnight ago.

But the arrival of Paximadia with an emphatic Anzac Day win convinced Snowden the colt can be a contender for elite honours, and a worthy addition to his Brisbane winter carnival team.

"I would put him on the radar for the winter carnival now," Snowden said.

"We'll see how he goes on from here but I'll definitely look towards Brisbane."

Snowden said he would target the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes as well as the final Australian Group One race for two-year-olds in 2012-2013, the BTC TJ Smith.

The trainer won the TJ Smith with Benfica in 2011.

A $7 to $13 drifter, Paximadia made his own luck en-route to a convincing win in the RAAF Handicap (1400m), putting paid to Liberty's Choice ($1.65) at the 200m to post a 1-1/4 length winning margin over the well-backed favourite.

"He's still very raw and very natural and it was good to race him on his home track but the horse he ran down had good form," Snowden said.

While Snowden is looking northward, Randwick trainer John O'Shea has been in no hurry with Lucky Lago and his patient attitude will continue despite the filly's win in the Dunkirk Maiden Plate (1400m).

Bred on staying lines and racing in colours made famous by Melbourne Cup-winning owner Keith Biggs, Lucky Lago ($4.20) underlined her potential with a two-length victory over Singing To Win ($15).

She parked just off the speed for Jim Cassidy before launching her bid on the turn and the result was barely in doubt in the straight.

"The plan is to get her through the grades and by this time next year we should have a really good racehorse," O'Shea said.

Lucky Lago is the second winner for Dizelle, a mare by super sire Zabeel who claimed the Australian Oaks for Biggs and his partners.

Former Melbourne galloper Boban brought some relief on an otherwise difficult day for leading trainer Chris Waller in the Gallipoli Handicap (1300m).

"He was a Listed winner in Brisbane last year so he knows how to get there but our job is to help him get back there," Waller said.

Waller will front stewards on Friday after three of his horses returned positive tests to a banned substance.

It is believed the positive swabs are the result of feed contamination.
