Canberra horses outed from Highway races

Tuesday 29 August 2017, 12:36pm

Canberra trainers have lost the battle to remain part of the Highway races for country-trained horses.

Racing NSW announced on Tuesday, they would no longer be eligible after December 2.

"In taking the decision, the Board of Racing NSW considered submissions made on the matter by the Canberra Racing Club and other parties," a Racing NSW statement said.

"The view of the Board was that based on the quality of training and other facilities available to them, Canberra-trained horses are the equal of NSW provincial-trained horses, which are also ineligible for Highway races."

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys said by giving the notice period, Canberra-trained horses would still be eligible for the $200,000 Anniversary Highway to be run at Randwick on October 14 as part of The Everest program.

Earlier this year, Canberra horses were transferred from the Country Championship series to Provincial and met with success when the Philip Courtney-trained Maryore won the final.

Canberra trainer Matt Dale is one of the most successful Highway winners.
