Waller praises Bowman's blinkered view

Thursday 13 July 2017, 5:37pm

Chris Waller believes Hugh Bowman's insight can lift Pioneering from a form slump at Rosehill, after the experienced jockey suggested a gear change for the out of sorts mare.

Bowman had the reins for two of the four-year-old's three starts this preparation, and after she laid out at Warwick Farm last weekend he thought blinkers would be a useful addition.

"He thought she might have been a bit hesitant amongst them so they go on. That's the beauty of having a jockey like Hugh Bowman," Waller said on his online preview.

Pioneering finished fifth in a Benchmark Handicap (1400m) and will be seeking to improve on that effort when she starts for the third Saturday in a row, this time over 1350m.

Bowman, who overtook Brenton Avdulla in the Sydney jockey's premiership race after a double at Canterbury on Wednesday, is set to extend his half-win lead with a full book of nine rides at Rosehill.

He combines with Waller in six races starting with the 2YO Handicap (1400m) with last-start maiden winner Calculated.

A son of dual Cox Plate winner So You Think, the colt faces a 10-day turnaround.

"It's a bit quick to be backing him up but the other options were 1200 next week or 1500 the week after. We've gone with the distance I feel will suit," Waller said.

Waller also predicted improvement for High Mist, who should benefit from a track in the good range after two thirds on rain-affected ground.

"Hugh said he struggled to quicken on the wet tracks so he gets everything in his favour, apart from the draw (13)," Waller said.

Bowman also rides the Waller-trained Sonic Swish, Zourkhan and Metallidc Crown.

Peter and Paul Snowden have secured Bowman's services for Gold Symphony in the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m).
