Ben Currie guilty on second charge

Wednesday 21 December 2016, 5:08pm

Toowoomba trainer Ben Currie has been found guilty of a charge involving a positive swab for the second time in a week.

Last week Currie was fined $6000 after he was found guilty of presenting Tints to race at Rockhampton in April with the prohibited steroid boldenone in her system.

Currie pleaded not guilty.

However, stewards adjourned a second inquiry into an alleged positive swab returned by Party Till Dawn when she won at Toowoomba on July16.

Queensland Racing Integrity Commission stewards resumed the inquiry on Wednesday and found Currie guilty of a second charge of presenting a horse to race with a prohibited substance in its system.

He had again pleaded not guilty.

QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett said Party Till Dawn had returned a positive sample to methamphetamine.

He said stewards would consider submissions from Currie and deliver a sentence at a later date.

Barnett said as the stewards' findings could be subject to appeal it was not appropriate to comment further.

Presenting a horse to race with a prohibited substance is a lesser charge than administering a prohibited substance.

It can carry various penalties ranging from a fine to disqualification.
