Qewy given a 0.5kg Melbourne Cup penalty

Thursday 20 October 2016, 11:39am

Godolphin stayer Qewy has moved a little further up the Melbourne Cup ballot order after being penalised for his Geelong Cup win.

The Charlie Appleby-trained stayer, who beat Grey Lion and Oceanographer in Wedesday's race, has been given a half-kilogram penalty by Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter following his all-the-way win.

Qewy will now carry 50.5kg, although weights will rise a minimum of one-kilogram when the final field is announced on October 29.

"Qewy carried 1kg less than Grey Lion at Geelong, and is now handicapped to carry 0.5kg less than that horse in the Melbourne Cup," Carpenter said.

The half-kilogram penalty is the same given to Geelong Cup winners Americain (2010) and Dunaden (2011) before they went on to Melbourne Cup glory.

Qewy has moved to 31st in the ballot order and is close to gaining a start with at least six horses above him listed as non-runners.

Trainer Chris Waller has already said Preferment and Sacred Master will not run.
