Jason Taylor to ride in Wellington Cup

Wednesday 20 January 2016, 7:25am

Jason Taylor has joined the list of Australian jockeys riding at feature meetings in New Zealand.

The Brisbane rider has been called up for the Shaune Ritchie-trained Snow Secret in Saturday's Group Two Wellington Cup (3200m) at Trentham.

"It's difficult to get an experienced Group One-winning rider at 52 kilos and we've got a four-year-old who really hasn't run against the more-hardened handicappers over two miles, so we needed to get the right type of jockey," Ritchie told nzracing.co.

"We've been friends with Jason for many years and we'd always said if we had a decent one in a good race, we'd get him over to ride.

"Jason's a natural lightweight and he won't have to waste to get to 52 and there wouldn't be too many Stradbroke Handicap-winning jockeys in that position.

Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne will ride Nashville in the Cup and Ringo in the Group One Thorndon Mile.

She will then ride at Sunday's Karaka Million meeting at Ellerslie in Auckland where Blake Shinn, Damian Browne and Stephen Baster will also be in action.
