Keep Cool steps up to pet distance

Friday 11 September 2015, 2:26pm

In the past two years former Victorian, NSW and New Zealand horses have won about 66 per cent of open company staying races in Brisbane.

Keep Cool gets the chance to join the group when he runs in Saturday's Qantas Founders Museum Hcp (2030m) .

Originally with Danny O'Brien in Melbourne where he won five times over 2000m and then with Joe Pride in Sydney, Keep Cool is now with Michael Lakey at Deagon.

In all the nine-year-old gelding has had 21 starts at 2000m for six wins and seven minor placings.

During his southern campaigns Keep Cool contested seven stakes races with his best effort third in the 2014 Hawkesbury Gold Cup behind Leebaz and Wistful.

Keep Cool, who is raced by Nick Moraitis, came to Lakey on the recommendation of Pride and has run two seconds.

"Joe stays with us when he comes to Brisbane and we have done a lot of work with him," Lakey said.

"He felt Keep Cool was no longer competitive against the better horses in Sydney and would be suited here.

"Keep Cool has certainly been racing well since he got here and Joe said his best distance is 2000 metres."

Michael Cahill has the ride on Keep Cool after Jeff Lloyd, who rode the gelding at his first two Brisbane starts, elected to ride last start Doomben winner Hot Saga.
