Our Ivanhowe to miss Makybe Diva

Friday 11 September 2015, 12:20pm

Our Ivanhowe has been scratched from the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington giving emergency Awesome Rock a start.

A dual Group One winner in Germany now trained by Lee and Anthony Freedman, Our Ivanhowe was an acceptor for Saturday's Makybe Diva (1600m) after Wednesday's barrier trials at Cranbourne were washed out.

Because he was unsure whether the postponed trials would go ahead on Friday, Lee Freedman said he took the precaution of putting Our Ivanhowe in at Flemington.

After a couple of days of better weather, Our Ivanhowe was at Cranbourne where he won his 1550m-heat by six lengths from Ethiopia.

"I didn't really care about the margin, I wanted him to have a good hit-out which he did," Lee Freedman said.

"He's pulled up really good after it."

He will now get his Cups campaign underway in the trainer's preferred option, the Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield on September 19.

Freedman said the 1600m at weight-for-age on firm ground on Saturday would not suit the horse as much as the slower tempo of a 2000m race at Caulfield.

"I don't mind taking him to firm ground when he gets to his trip, that's no issue, but I don't think he could have been a factor tomorrow in that sort of a race," Freedman said.

"He'll improve off that trial. He's not rock-hard fit, but he's fit enough to go around in that race next week."

Freedman says he will see how Our Ivanhowe performs in the Naturalism before deciding a path to the Caulfield Cup.

Options included the Turnbull Stakes or Bart Cummings at Flemington or The Metropolitan in Sydney.
