Vezalay may just be the replacement mare the father-and-son training team of Leon and Troy Corstens has been looking for if her first-up success at Caulfield is any barometer.
The Corstens's prepared former top-class mare Commanding Jewel to win two Let's Elope Stakes at Flemington and they plan to head in the same direction with Vezalay.
Having her first start since she finished out of the money in the Group One William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley in March, Vezalay led throughout to win Saturday's Beveridge Williams Plate (1100m).
Ridden by Damien Oliver, Vezalay ($2.05 favourite) scored by a length from More Radiant ($8) with I'm A Flying Star ($41) another 2-1/4 lengths away third.
Vezalay's only other win was in a Seymour maiden and while Saturday's race was just her sixth start she has been impressing the Corstens team on the training track.
"You always hope that they produce it on the racetrack," Leon Corstens said.
Corstens said Vezalay would now head to the Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 29 before stepping up to the Let's Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on September 12.
He is keen to see Vezalay ridden with a sit as he believes 1400m may be as far as she wants.
Oliver also has Vezalay earmarked as a sprinter and says she outsped her rivals at Caulfield.
"I went out with an open mind whether we lead or take a sit but she was too quick for them and put herself right there," Oliver said.
