City racing has Mallyon's full attention

Katelyn Mallyon is putting all her energy into outriding her metropolitan claim before the end of her apprenticeship.

Last week at Caulfield Mallyon secured a career highlight with a treble which brought her to within two wins of her goal.

Mallyon was due to finish her apprenticeship this week but was granted an extra month because of time spent on the sidelines through injury.

She had a heavy fall at Flemington in 2012 which resulted in a severe back injury and had another stint on the sidelines after a fall at a Moonee Valley in February which upset an old injury.

The week has been a quiet one for Mallyon who hasn't ridden in a race since Geelong on Sunday.

She heads to Moonee Valley on Saturday with rides in six of the nine races and even though she is booked for one ride at Horsham on Sunday will be restricting herself to city meetings for the majority of the next month.

"I'm fully focusing on the town meetings at the moment," Mallyon said.

"It's a race against time as I've only got the month to get it done."

Mallyon suggested Hard Romp, the $3.80 second favourite behind Il Cavallo ($2.70) in the Melbourne Signage Concepts Handicap (1000m), was her best ride at Moonee Valley.

She went to Caulfield during the week to partner the Ciaron Maher-trained sprinter in a gallop.

"He's such a consistent horse and with the good barrier he should be able to put himself right there," she said.

"He's good at the 1000 (metres) and I galloped him the other morning and he felt nice and sharp."

Her other rides are Star Planet, Savannah Moon, Flash Of Doubt, Pin Your Hopes and Secessio.
