Oliver takes premiership lead in Melbourne

Dwayne Dunn's Melbourne jockeys' premiership chances have ended for the season but Damien Oliver and Craig Williams remain in an enthralling contest for the title.

A winning treble for Oliver (58 winners) at Bendigo on Wednesday at the third-last metropolitan meeting of the season has taken him to a one-win lead over Williams who rode a winning double.

Dunn is also level with Williams but can't add to his tally.

Dunn was suspended last week for careless riding at Moonee Valley which ruled him out of Wednesday's meeting and also the final two metropolitan fixtures of the season at Caulfield this Saturday and Ballarat on Sunday.

Oliver has won nine Melbourne jockeys' premierships while Williams has won four.

Wins in consecutive races to Oliver on Pink Perfection and I Am Grouse, in the third and fourth races, on Wednesday erased Dunn's lead and then Oliver took the outright lead with victory on the Ciaron Maher-trained Barely A Scent two races later.

Williams won on three-year-old Robbie's Star in the second race and then responded to Oliver's treble when he added another victory late in the program on the Shawn Mathrick-trained So Does He.

Oliver noted he was getting plenty of opportunities at the back end of the season with the premiership race so close, when normally apprentices who can utilise their claims would be more in demand during winter.

"The trainers are getting right behind it, I must say," Oliver told Racing Live after his win on the Peter Moody-trained Pink Perfection.

"I've never had so many good opportunities at this time of year because it's usually dominated by the apprentices.

"It's a good battle ... I think it's going to go down to the wire."

Oliver and Williams both have a full book of nine rides at Caulfield on Saturday.
