Winners Come for O'Lonhro

Thursday 18 June 2015, 9:38am

That was some win!" said the caller as exciting two-year-old Vella Lonchick stormed home from the rear to win a strong 2Y0 Handicap at Canberra on Friday.

So far back and wide that she was out of the picture for most of the straight, the George Vella trained filly at only her second start really let go over the final stages, swamping her rivals to salute by an impressive 3/4 length.

Catching the eye with a similarly strong finish at her debut at the same track two weeks previously, Vella Lonchick is the first runner from the second crop of Larneuk Stud's emerging young stallion O'Lonhro.

A record-breaking Gr.2 winning son of the mighty Lonhro, O'Lonhro has been represented by ten smart winners and so consistent and genuine are his progeny that only three of his first 25 runners have not earned prize money.

And at Flemington on Wednesday two of his three-year-olds put the writing on the wall with outstanding performances - the exciting gallopers Lirabird and Beau Padrille close to breaking through at metropolitan level.

The winner of her first two at Pakenham and Bendigo, the Geni Gillis trained filly was having her first run down the Flemington straight and what a great race she ran - a gallant second to the talented and more experienced Encosta de Lago filly Faction.

Despite being left alone in the lead a fair way from home, Lirabird fought right to the line, impressing her proud trainer.

"She was wondering what was going on when she hit the lead so early but she tried so hard."

Confident that Lirabird "will be all the better over more ground," Gillis is excited about her filly's prospects as she continues to mature.

Meanwhile Caulfield trainer Geoff Wheeler also has plenty to look forward to with Beau Padrille who, rising in class off a Cranbourne maiden victory, flew home for a close-up fourth at the same meeting.

"That was a big thrill," he said, delighted with the wrap given to him by jockey Craig Newitt who was riding the bay for the first time.

"This is a Saturday class horse," he enthused as soon as he dismounted.

"If today's race had been a mile he would've won - and if he had drawn a good gate he would've won."

Getting back to the rear from the outside gate, Beau Padrille swung wide into the straight before storming late.

"The further into the race the stronger he got," Newitt said.

"He a big, athletic horse who is still learning - and I think he will be at his best over a mile and beyond," he added.
