Wicked Intent win soothes Munce's nerves

Saturday 13 June 2015, 1:47pm

Chris Munce admitted he was the most nervous he had been since taking up training before star colt Wicked Intent won at Ipswich on Saturday.

As it turned out, Munce had nothing to worry about with Wicked Intent, the $1.95 favourite, beating Real Good ($5.50) by 1-3/4 lengths in the Bundamba Plate (1100m).

"I really was wound up and nervous. He was a short-priced favourite and he was expected to win so the pressure was on," Munce said.

"I had him as good as I could get him but there is always the worry something might go wrong."

Munce is in the rare position of having won on Wicked Intent as a jockey before he retired in January.

"Wicked Intent will go for a break now and then we will bring him back in a month or two," Munce said.

"We tried him at 1350 metres in the BRC Sires' (Produce Stakes) and he didn't run it.

"It means we will keep him to sprint trips from now on."

Wicked intent ran 1min3.18secs which bettered the class and race record held by Group One sprinter Buffering.

Jockey Damian Browne made one of his rare appearances at Ipswich to win on Wicked Intent.

"I haven't been here for about two years and I think the GPS must have been wrong because I had trouble finding the place," Browne said.

"But it was worth it. He wasn't the best to begin but he has genuine pace and he is very smart."
