Magic Hurricane well backed for Aust debut

Godolphin trainer John O'Shea has delivered even better news for Sydney barrier trial watchers who are all over the stable's latest overseas import in the lead-up to the June Stakes meeting.

Magic Hurricane will have his introduction to Sydney racing in a benchmark race at Randwick on Saturday with the stable's 3kg apprentice Brodie Loy to do the riding.

But it will be anything but a low-key start to the stayer's Australian career, thanks to a betting move that has caught out bookmakers who have been operating on the race since Wednesday.

Magic Hurricane is a $6 chance in some quarters after as much as $21 was offered and there is a suggestion the import could start favourite in the Randwick City Council Handicap.

The five-year-old was the stand-out finisher in a Randwick barrier trial last month.

"If you thought he looked good in his trial, go and have a look at his races in England. His form is outstanding," O'Shea said.

Magic Hurricane has raced 10 times in England for two wins and three placings and he will be nominated for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

"A mile and a half will be his pet distance and while 1400 (metres) might just be a bit short for him on Saturday, we've claimed to try to help him," O'Shea said.

O'Shea said Magic Hurricane would have a short campaign before being prepared for the spring.

"We'll maybe give him two runs because he is a fatty and I don't want him having too long out," O'Shea said.

O'Shea has already struck paydirt with a select group of imports sent to Australia on the advice of Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock advisor John Ferguson.

Contributer has won twice at Group One level since arriving last year while stablemate Hartnell notched an elite win in the BMW.

Magic Hurricane was bought from leading English trainer James Fanshawe.
