Newitt heads to Singapore on winning note

Saturday 6 December 2014, 3:06pm

Singapore-bound Craig Newitt believes Sang Choi Bao has the makings of a good horse after a last-to-first victory at Sandown.

Newitt leaves for Singapore next week after being granted a six-month licence to ride from January 1.

Given time to settle, Sang Choi Bao ($19) unleashed a powerful burst down the outside in the Dunlite Handicap to score by a neck from Good Offa ($18) with Lock And Load ($91) a long neck away third.

Newitt told connections that Sang Choi Bao should be kept to the shorter trips until he learns to race.

"I think he's pretty talented and has a pretty good future," Newitt said.

"I came out pretty negative on him, wanting him to switch off, but he had them covered a long way out."

A Super VOBIS and a VOBIS Gold qualified horse, Sang Choi Boa picked up $43,000 in bonuses on top of the $48,000 first prize money.

Trainer Jason Warren said the race had been targeted with the bonuses on offer.

"We wanted to win a VOBIS Gold bonus race which we have done," Warren said.

"I think he's a progressive horse. He's had four runs this time in so we might back off on him and look for a nice race."
