Cooldini assigned weighty task at Sandown

Wednesday 3 December 2014, 5:40pm

It is rare for a metropolitan fixture to have a topweight handicapped on 66kg in a flat race but Cooldini will be an exception at Sandown.

Cooldini has been allocated the hefty impost in the Robhar Breeding & Racing Plate (1300m) and will carry 63kg after apprentice Jordan Childs' claim on Saturday.

He is 11 points clear on ratings from the next in the weights Aeratus, allocated 60.5kg but will carry 58.5kg after the claim for Patrick Moloney.

Trainer Robert Smerdon is using the race as a starting point that he hopes may see the gelding head to Tasmania for Cup races in February.

In reality Cooldini is carrying 9kg above the minimum handicap - 8kg if the emergency acceptors don't gain a start.

Smerdon described Cooldini as a "massive" horse who will have no trouble with the weight, although the 1300-metre trip is way short of his best.

"It's a 55 (kilogram) minimum so it's not like the old days where the minimum was a stone (7kg) less," Smerdon said.

"He's a big horse, 17 hands, so I don't think the weight will bother him."

Smerdon said horses are used to carry the sort of weight Cooldini will lug on Saturday in trackwork and in barrier trials.

"It's a kick-off point for him," Smerdon said.

"Depending on his form he could be in line for the Tasmanian Cups but there's a bit of water to flow under the bridge for that to happen."

Cooldini was a Listed-race winner of the Roy Higgins Quality over 2600m at Flemington in March and hasn't raced since finishing fourth over 1610m at Flemington on April 25.
