Queensland to promote fillies and mares

Sunday 30 November 2014, 9:57am

Racing Queensland is set to expand its successful provincial summer series with a set of races restricted to fillies and mares.

The governing body has been pleased with the response to its $240,000 summer benchmark provincial series which will be completed with a $100,000 final at Doomben next Saturday.

The series has featured seven $20,000 heats run at the Ipswich, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Warwick and Rockhampton tracks.

Points were allocated for the placings and the top scorers qualify for Saturday's final.

RQ chief executive Darren Condon said the response from owners and trainers had been very good.

The favourite for Saturday's final is likely to be the Liam Birchley-trained Jack's Jet who scored an impressive win at Ipswich on Wednesday.

"The heats have attracted big fields of substantial quality and the TAB turnover has been good," Condon said.

He said RQ wanted to expand the idea to a series restricted to fillies and mares.

"Our fillies and mares races have lacked a little in depth and this would be one way to promote them," Condon said.

The full details of the fillies and mares series will be released early next year.
