Two Vic trainers with high cobalt levels

Tuesday 6 October 2015, 6:46pm

Len Xuereb and John Leek have become the latest Victorian trainers embroiled in the cobalt scandal.

The Xuereb-trained Elegantly Wasted returned a level of 251mcg per litre of urine in a sample taken after she won a Sale maiden on July 9.

With a 25mcg measure of uncertainty, she has been recorded at 226mcg, still above the threshold of 200. The B sample came back at 240 adjusted to 220 after a 20mcg measure of uncertainty.

The Leek-trained Sprit Cent returned a level of 228mcg, adjusted to 203mcg, after he won at Sandown on July 3.

The second sample from Spirit Cent detected the level at 210 mcg, adjusted to 190 after the degree of uncertainty.

Racing Victoria stewards said their investigations were ongoing and both trainers had been informed.

High profile trainer Peter Moody, who has been charged with a cobalt offence, has also formally been charged with a raceday administration to Lady Tatia who was withdrawn from a race at Pakenham last month.

The administration of the substance known as Kelato SwellDOWN, a clay poultice containing prohibited substances, was detected during a raceday stable inspection.
