Amicus impresses in Let's Elope Stakes

Saturday 12 September 2015, 5:53pm

A bigger, stronger Amicus produced a strong finish to claim a Group Two win at Flemington and remain unbeaten for her spring campaign.

Justine Hailes, in charge of trainer Chris Waller's Melbourne stable, said staff were amazed at the condition of Amicus when she arrived at Flemington.

That was only two days before the Let's Elope Stakes on Saturday in which the mare staged a last-stride win in a blanket finish.

Ridden by Craig Newitt, Amicus ($15) charged home from back in the field to record a neck win from Precious Gem ($41) with May's Dream ($14) a nose away third.

Amicus won the Thousand Guineas in Melbourne last spring before campaigning in Sydney during the autumn.

"We were amazed at how much she has filled out from last year," Hailes said.

"She's an amazing big mare with a great nature."

Amicus returned from a winter break to score in the Toy Show Quality at Randwick on August 22 but was facing a rise in grade.

Hailes said she was unsure of plans for the daughter of Fastnet Rock that holds a nomination for next month's Epsom Handicap at Randwick but would be ideally placed in the Group One Myer Classic at Flemington.

"I think she will be aimed at a Group One, something like the Myer, but I'm not sure what Chris has in mind just yet," she said.

"I'll find out on Monday."

Newitt said the plan was to ride her quietly and rely on the tempo of the race.

"She came off the bridle at the top of the straight when they really quickened and it took her 50 to 100 metres to hit her straps," Newitt said.

"Through the line she really started to motor."
