Winx sprouts wings to earn Epsom Hcp shot

Saturday 12 September 2015, 5:49pm

Winx has rocketed into contention for the Group One Epsom Handicap after producing a powerful finish to win the Theo Marks Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Chris Waller-trained mare had not raced since the Queensland Oaks but it was another Brisbane winter carnival win that provided her trainer with a template for Saturday's 1300m race.

Waller revealed Winx's win in the Sunshine Coast Guineas, when she dropped 800m in distance, was ridden cold from a wide draw and motored down the outside, gave him an important insight.

"That gave me the confidence to come back today and try and get in from the wide gate," Waller said.

"And gee, we might have to change her name from Winx to Wings.

"She'll press on to the Epsom now. It looks a nice race for her over the mile in three weeks time."

The victory by Winx was Waller's fourth on the Rosehill program after Silverball took out the Kingston Town Stakes, Catkins the Sheraco Stakes and Good Project a support race.

The only blight on his afternoon was in the Group One Golden Rose when Press Statement had no luck and finished fifth.

He also won the Group Two Let's Elope Stakes in Melbourne with Amicus.

But the performance of Winx had to be seen to be believed with the mare baulked on the home turn and spotting the leaders a seemingly insurmountable start before she steamed down the outside to grab victory in the final bounds.

The win prompted Waller to pitch Winx as the stable's next top mare.

"Only good horses can do it. She's very special and I think she might be in for a pretty good year," he said.

"She may be the new Catkins."

Winx, backed from $4.60 to start a $3.40 favourite, won by a head over Sons Of John ($31) who was trainer Jason Attard's first Saturday metropolitan runner.

"I would have been happy just to see him running on well for fourth or fifth. I just wanted to see him hitting the line," Attard said.

"We needed to see how he measured up and he did. We will definitely head to the Epsom now."

Ninth Legion ($13) was another short neck away third in a strong return.
