Dunlop eyeing off Sydney with Red Cadeaux

The travelling days of veteran Red Cadeaux are not over yet with another trip to Australia early next year on the radar.

English trainer Ed Dunlop said Group One races during The Championships in Sydney in April were targets for the dual Melbourne Cup runner-up.

"I have a major inkling to bring him back here again for the Championships in Sydney," Dunlop said at Werribee on Friday where Red Cadeaux has been thriving in now-familiar surroundings.

"The owner (Hong Kong based Ron Arculli) would like to go back for the Dubai World Cup, but that race is now being run on dirt and I don't think it will suit him.

"I would like to come back here, do quarantine here, maybe have a run and then head to Sydney."

Dunlop said the Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington in March would be an ideal lead-up race for either the BMW (2400m) or the Sydney Cup (3200m) during The Championships.

The Sydney Cup this week received a prize money injection of $600,000 taking it to $1.6 million.

Depending how Red Cadeaux performs in next week's Melbourne Cup the gelding could either travel to the Japan Cup at the end of November or the Hong Kong Vase in December before a short break back home at Newmarket in England.

Dunlop said although travelling horses had become a lot easier, there was still much to be considered before any final decisions were made on a Sydney mission.

He said nine-year-old Red Cadeaux's longevity came down to a love of travelling and the way he looked after himself.

"He's had a very light campaign in Europe this year which I think has helped him," Dunlop said.
