Blinkers turn it around for Lumosty

Saturday 25 October 2014, 3:22pm

Trainer Robert Smerdon has some thinking to do with Lumosty after her win in the Drummond Golf Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley.

Wearing blinkers for the first time, Lumosty ($1.70 fav) scored by two-and-a-half lengths over Tahni Dancer ($4.40) with Berimbau ($16) a length-and-three-quarters away third.

"That's it for me, I'm off home now," Smerdon said.

Smerdon also won the opening race of the day with Fontiton and said he would talk to jockey Nick Hall before deciding on the Lumosty's immediate program.

He was concerned the filly had over-raced early in the race before settling better when racing back off Tender.

Smerdon said he would likely take Lumosty straight to the Crown Oaks (2500m), bypassing the Wakeful Stakes (2000m).

"If she does go to the Oaks she will likely go straight there," Smerdon said.

"I wouldn't want to give her three runs in 12 days as it wouldn't be fair to her.

"I'll have a talk to Nick Hall, not only is he a good jockey but he's a good judge as well."

Lumosty firmed from $10 to $4.60 in Oaks betting following her win in the race previously known as the Moonee Valley Oaks.
