Hayes keen on Tawteen at Valley

Thursday 23 October 2014, 4:54pm

Trainer David Hayes is hoping the absence of two top fillies will pave the way for Tawteen to post a victory at Moonee Valley.

Tawteen lines-up in the Crockett Stakes (1200m) on Friday night having chased home Eloping and Earthquake at her past two starts.

Eloping relegated Tawteen into third place at Moonee Valley on September 26 while Earthquake had the better of her at Caulfield on October 11.

Tawteen had won her three previous starts including an all-the-way victory over Friday night's course and distance.

Stephen Baster, who partnered Tawteen to the hat-trick of wins and was aboard at her latest outing, again has the ride on Friday night.

Hayes believes Tawteen is yet to reach her peak this preparation and hasn't gone backwards since chasing home Earthquake.

"I'm pretty confident," Hayes said.

"I reckon she will get an undisputed lead. She'll enjoy looking up and not seeing those two good fillies Earthquake and Eloping."

Hayes said Friday night's result would determine what path he took with Tawteen during Melbourne Cup week.

The trainer's numbers may be down for the Moonee Valley meetings on Friday night and Saturday but he is gearing up for a big Melbourne Cup carnival.

"I reckon we'll have quite a number of runners Melbourne Cup week but the ones I run this weekend will be hard to beat," he said.
