Oliver gets Group 1 call for Angelic Light

Thursday 23 October 2014, 3:34pm

Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths is hoping a change of jockey can pave the way to a Group One victory at Moonee Valley.

Damien Oliver will partner the Griffiths-trained Angelic Light in the Manikato Stakes on Friday night, replacing Ryan Maloney.

Griffiths said Maloney had done nothing wrong aboard the mare however he owed it to the owners to engage Oliver.

"He's the winningest Group One jockey in Victoria and Australia and if he was committed elsewhere Ryan would have been on her," Griffiths said.

"When he showed an interest it was canvassed around the ownership group and I thought we've only got one Group One horse, he's won the most races at that level, so why not have a crack."

Angelic Light has the form and a liking for the Moonee Valley track to be considered a genuine Manikato contender.

She downed Lankan Rupee in the McEwen Stakes over 1000m on September 6 before finishing fourth behind Buffering in the Moir Stakes over Friday night's course and distance.

Griffiths said the small field and a bias towards racing down near the fence had played a part in the outcome of that race.

"It became a bit technical last time and closer to the rail was first home," Griffiths said.

"The widest was us and we were fourth of the five home.

"There was a blanket between the four horses so I think that re-enforces the fact it wasn't a fluke that she won the lead-up.

"We've been close-up in a few Group Ones and it would be nice to get one across the line."
